Not what I had in mind for today: Just came from yet another baranggay hall meeting regarding the same neighbours only now they're the complainants and it's about a non-issue borne of prejudice and prior problems. It's amazing how quickly conversant one can get about local ordinances on land property issues when your living conditions depend on it. Everything's more or less better, now, ie, we've ironed out the present issues all the while trying to avoid invoking the past issues (not very successful). It's all stuff that could've been avoided but alas, we live in the Philippines. Good thing I love this country.
What I had in mind for today: Writing essays. I had plans to write my longish Lost reaffirmation essay viewed side-by-side with Fringe, but a few new assignments (what I call "service essays" [thank you DFW]) proved to be too important, namely an essay on Labour Day set against Call Centre Culture, a sort of realignment of what's what (entitled "This Is A Call"), and an op-ed thang assigned from On High about RaceFail 2010, or more specifically, Charles Tan's immensely cringe-worthy forty-car-pile-up in uberly perverse slow-mo account of it (and subsequent clarifications). I have no desire to throw a match into this already flaming heap of twisted metal and burning diesel and creeping blood and broken bones and ripped flesh - I just found out about this last weekend, and even by then the issue was already too batteredly drawn out - also, a blogger named Ephemere put everything so clearly and so precisely and with the prerequisite longview understanding of what's what that I just felt that everything I plan to say about this issue is already rendered redundant, and I just really want to talk about something else, pretty much what I think is the root of all this talk, ie, RaceFail, Charles Tan's RaceFailFail, that is, in a word: Responsibility. Right now I'm thinking if I can mash this up into a more pointed essay on the Writers' Right to Offend. Still thinking about it.
And the possibility of getting all this thinking down on paper depends on the success of my defragging my head of the issues as stated on the first paragraph. Good luck to me.

On RaceFail: Yup, Charles Tan wrote a very bad essay. Mukha lahat ata ng nakapagbasa noon ay nag-comment o kaya'y mag-post ng sariling blog entry para lang ma-exorcise sa karanasan na nakabasa sila ng isang napakapangit na essay. (yeah, kasama na ako roon.)
On Pinoy-language Speculative Fiction mula sa previous blog entry: Ano iyon, anthology? Naisip na rin namin ng isang kakilala na gumawa ng ganyan (more as a joke noong nag-iinuman kami). Tatawagin dapat naming "S'pek Pek" ang antho. Siyempre, hirap seryosohin kung ganoon nga ang pamagat ng antho.
Ahhhhh. Writing the essay was painful and posting it was nerve-wracking but all the effort more than worth it. Salamat, salamat, salamat. Salamat!

Sana magkaroon na ng Pinoy-language antho. Ewan ko lang kung makakasulat ako para sa ganun pero gusto ko talaga makabasa.
@CMC - Yeah, kung me isang magandang bagay na nangyari mula sa pagsulat ng essay na yun ay yung fact lang na marami ang biglang napa-isip at naisipang ipaliwanag ang pananaw nila tungkol sa isyu na yun. Di man ako nag-a-agree sa mga sinabi niya, pero magandang bagay na naiungkat ang mga bagay na yun. Kailangan natin ng mas maraming tao na malinaw mag-isip at magsulat.
@Mia - Bilib lang talaga ako sa sinulat mo dun, rendered speechless kasi yun na ang gusto kong sabihin tungkol dun directly, e. Di na talaga kailangang dagdagan pa.
@CMC & @Mia - The Pinoy-lingo writing group Katha compiled an antho of Pinoy-lingo specfic stuff, mga isang taon na mahigit, siguro magdadalawa na, tas me isa akong akda na nakasalang dun (mababasa sa PDF ko na TEXTICLES). Last time I heard, nasa publisher na siya - Ateneo Press - and slated for some future release, but that was a year ago na. Edited by Roland Tolentino and Rommel Rodriguez. Ganda sana nun kasi kung Katha yun, chancer are andun sina Luna Sicat, Vim Nadera, Joi Barrios, Vlad Gonzales, Mykel Andrada, at isama na rin sina Ser Roland at Ser Omeng, all these Pinoy-lingo fiction stylists ng mga nakaraang dalawampung taon na to begin with ay may sayad na ang pagsusulat, what more kung yung intent pa ay maging mas pakawala?
And a few years earlier than that, Vlad Gonzales compiled a mainly Pinoy-lingo antho of specfic stories for Psicom called PSIFI (ako gumawa ng cover!), pero walang nangyari dun, inupuan lang nung publisher kahit binayaran na nila't lahat, kasi, and I quote, "walang market para sa Tagalog scifi dito."
